LIGHT THE PEOPLE

Light The People is a photography project to investigate and reveal the bonds that people develop with their Cuboluce. No ordinary lamp, Cuboluce is a veritable masterpiece of lighting design.

The individuals who took part in this project come from all the different sectors of the creative disciplines: each in his or her own way, their black and white shots give us an insight into their relationships with this timeless lamp, which encapsulates quality, technique and innovation.

Cini&Nils entrusted the photographer Federico Villa with the task of capturing for posterity these spontaneous, sometimes intimate, sometimes playful and sometimes theatrical relationships with this fantastic little object.

“It is light that gives a place its tone, expressing its empathy and making it unforgettable. When I was interviewing him for the design magazine Modo back at the end of the eighties, the well-known director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno explained that “when people are afraid of the going to the movies, it is always associated with a fear of the dark. Violent things happen in the shadows”, concluding: “all you have to do to make cities safer is illuminate them better”. I have my own personal list of places whose light makes them special: I think of the sunlight at 1.00 p.m. in extreme locations, like Otranto, Italy’s easternmost city, or Belem, the westernmost point on the European mainland, where it makes every outline stand out with clarity and gives the impression that the sea is almost solid, like a precious stone. Or the light at the zenith in Normandy, which makes the horizons blur like a watercolour, while the hot midday light in India gives landscapes the density of tempera drawings and the desert of the Australian outback at the same time of day is as thick as a pasty oil painting. At the other extreme I think of the almost liquid nocturnal shadows of the alleyways of Tokyo, illuminated by lanterns made of damp, porous washi paper.”

“Cuboluce was the lamp on my nightstand when I was a little girl. I hadn’t thought about it any more for such a long time. Holding my old light-in-a-box in my hand again certainly brought back memories. It made me forge a bond between an intimate childhood memory and my adult awareness that the piece has become a design icon. To some extent, it was an exercise in reviving my memory and reexperiencing a happy childhood moment.”
